My volunteering role at Amber

Mary Lou first started volunteering at Ashley Court, our Devon centre, one afternoon a week supporting residents 121 or occasionally in small groups.

Mary Lou’s has worked in mediation and counselling for a range of organisations including a hospice and a neighbourhood mediation organisation, largely working with young people and their families struggling with disruptive behaviour, conflict and truancy.

I believe that everyone has the capacity to change and I really like supporting young people get their lives back on track which is what attracted me to a volunteering role at Amber. It feel it is important not to judge young people on past mistakes and to give them a chance.

“My role is to supplement the support offered by Amber’s counsellor and the mental health services by giving the young people an extra outlet and someone to support them develop strategies to cope with life’s challenges, resolve conflict and adjust to living in a communal environment.

Mary- Lou’s volunteering role has since developed and she comes in regularly helping residents grow vegetables in the garden and allotment while also giving them an extra space to talk.
